“Hello Madame, Buy Something”

Luang Prabang and Siem Reap both have night markets filled with local favourites and imports from around South East Asia and China.  Luang Prabang’s market was quite laid back, the vendors just said hello – “sabaidee” and were content to wait to see if we were interested.  Siem Reap is much more of a tourist town so their market greeting is a bit more determined – two words:  “Hellomadame, buysomething”.  Although they have a great sense of humour – we can make them laugh out loud when we say back to the women “hellomadame” in the same sing-song. One seller’s nearby friend laughed and gave me a high-five, stamping her feet down in laughter.

Here are some pictures of what you can buy in Laos and Cambodia.  Deb, if you don’t want to see your Xmas present, skip over the photos of the bottled scorpions.
