On our trip around the world we saw stand-up paddle boards for the first time in Vietnam. Tourists were out on the South China Sea paddling along in water the temperature of a warm bath. This Christmas Santa brought Anne-Marie her very own stand-up paddle board. Here are a few snaps of her out on the Straight of Georgia (temperature approximately 0 degrees) on boxing day. You can see the Oak Bay Marina and the Olympic Mountains in the background of some of the pictures.

It looks like a lot of fun although I couldn’t see Anne-Marie’s facial expressions! Next I want to see Lucy with A-M on the board!

Cool! I second the request to see Lucy riding along. Was there a wind? A-M — can you paddle up to Gabriola? We’ll pick you up at the beach.

Not to much wind. If there is wind the waves are choppy and I am not quite ready for that. It is feasible to paddle to Gabriola, perhaps after much practice!

How wonderful! I’ve been so keen to try this. Is it as fun as it looks? Or is it hard? I went up the Gorge last summer in one of the cute little ferry boats and there were several people paddling up and down the waterway. TOO TOO FUN!
Happy New Year! May it be a splendid one for you all.
Much love
Kath

It is very fun Kath. Whenever you are interested we can meet up and you can give it a try – on the Gorge or at Beaver Lake. Either are good for beginners. I was probably one of those you saw paddling on the Gorge last summer as that is where I was learning. Happy New Year to you and Kit as well!

Excuse me, are you insane? Please tell me that you were wearing a sub-zero dry-vac polar icecap zoot suit underneath that lightweight westcoast bike rainjacket. dear lord

Not quite but layers of fleece and merino wool seem to work. If I stay away from choppy waves I have not yet dunked (knock on wood). Must wear my pfd next time though. Made the photographer very worried.

hmmm…I think I’ll keep to paddling around Gillies Bay on very hot (and very calm) days…
I kept looking for ‘how to’s’ on the web. I figure my problem was when the instructions said to get ‘smoothly and quickly’ to your feet….
Hope you enjoy it!
